On Mindfulness

“I am present!”

I feel the word mindfulness is over-used, and thus, has lost its meaning. What does it truly mean to be mindful? Is it being able to clear out your mind of all thoughts or is it meditating and becoming a yogi.. It's a really confusing term. It confuses almost everyone, and yet everyone talks about mindfulness or mindful meditation.

It's actually really simple. And once you experience it, you'll never want to go back. Being mindful is just being present. Being present with the food you're eating or being present with the friends you are with.

We go through life, rushing through things. Have you ever found yourself gobbling down your food while driving from one site to the other? I have!

Have you ever driven home from a place and realize you don't know how you got from point A to B? Guilty as charged.

In this day and age, where our lives are just go go go.. How can we slow down just for a few minutes and breathe and relax and ground ourselves?!

I learned to do this when I decided to take photographs. I would grab my camera and just go out and take pictures of the weeds going wild in the grass or the interesting cloud patterns in the sky. My life stopped moving for a few moments and I could just appreciate whatever it was that I was photographing or looking at. I was able to take deep breaths and truly enjoy that moment.

Being mindful is as simple as that. Why wait to go on a vacation to slow down your life, when you can take mini vacations in your backyard or the local playground every day.

I would love to teach you more about mindfulness in our therapy sessions. Feel free to hit the get started button or contact me via phone or email.
